Rural Education Institute provides an after-school program for students in primera and secundaria and additional coaching for students in preparatoria in campo communities. Having worked over the past years in Jalpa and La Palma, Rural Education continues in La Palma and, beginning next school year, will begin to work in the community of Don Diego. Working in partnership with the Elejido and the community, Rural Education Institute is in the process of completing the construction of a new community center in which both the Rural Education program and other community programs will be held.
The Rural Education Institute program focuses on three areas with the students: Spanish literacy, basic English, and basic computer skills. These essential building blocks are the foundation for encouraging students to pursue education at least through preparatoria, and even university. Having their preparatoria diploma is a key qualification for employment in industries and manufacturing, major source, of economic growth in Guanajuato.
The program is staffed by volunteer interns, often from the US and Canada, but also from other countries. These interns have completed undergraduate studies and often have or are pursuing a master’s degree. Fluency in Spanish is required. The interns for the coming year are all graduate students, some of whom are fulfilling a field experience requirement for their program. They have also been selected for their experience and knowledge in Latin culture.
Tickets for the concert are 200 pesos and may be purchased at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, La Connexión, and La Biblioteca. Tickets will also be available at the door. St. Paul’s is located on Calzada del Cardo 6.
