From the SPA
By Megan Gabel
Fostering is ideal for people who love animals but are unable to own one. It is a short-term commitment, so even if you are not a full-time resident, you can get your cat or dog “fix” while helping to save the lives of animals. The SPA provides all medical care at our on-site clinic and can help with other needs. You provide love, attention, and a caring home to a deserving animal until we have space or until the animal is old enough or well enough to be adoptable. We also have a weekend foster program for current dogs—a mini vacation for them, the chance to be part of a family for a weekend—and a wonderful experience for you. To sign up or learn more about this program and our regular foster program, please email SPAFosters@gmail.com and see our website at http://www.spasanmiguel.org/how-you-can-help/foster-program.
For those of you who love animals but can’t adopt or foster, how about becoming a virtual pet owner? The Adopt Me! pages on our website give you the opportunity to take certain cats (like Martin) and dogs (like Rita) under your wing. Martin, a handsome charcoal gray and white six-year-old male cat has been at the SPA since he was a baby and believes that the SPA is his forever home. A volunteer favorite who gets along with all the other cats, Martin loves sitting on laps. Rita has been at the SPA since 2011, having arrived at only 2-1/2 months old. She is afraid of new people, but for those she knows and loves, she is happy to cuddle and is quite fond of giving kisses all around your ears. Medium-sized, a little over five years old, she’d just as soon keep you company in a quiet place than face those whizzing cars. Virtually adopt Martin or Rita or another in that program, and we’ll give you regular updates about your chosen virtual pet.
Please remember that through the end of July, anonymous donors have agreed to match every donation to the Pet Food Money Bank, up to US$1,500, so now is the time to make a contribution! All money raised will be applied to the annual cost of feeding our resident animals (about 100 cats and dogs, waiting to be adopted). Details are here: http://www.spasanmiguel.org/how-you-can-help/pet-food-money-bank. We welcome you to visit the SPA at Los Pinos 7, 152 6124, Monday-Saturday, 11-2, and meet our cats and dogs (and volunteer?). See firsthand what your donations are helping to support.
