The Healing Music of Russill Paul

By Estella Inda

Russill Paul has been teaching spirituality to the West in some of the most respected institutions, centers, and conferences in the United States and Canada. His training was as a Benedictine monk and yogi in India. In addition to teaching through online events and live programs around the United States and other parts of the world, he has been a professional musician for 35 years, a record producer for 25 years, and a published author for 11 years.

After very tragic episodes in his life, he decided to become a monk when he awakened and renounced the material world to be redeemed by a life of spirituality, discipline, and intense introspection. For five years he lived an austere life, away from the life he knew of rock ‘n’ roll, alcohol, and romantic love. During this time, he discovered the power and scope of Indian spirituality, including yoga, meditation, devotional music, and songs. This became the foundational experience for his current job. He offers himself and his music to the world, and now it has a purpose of healing according to his spiritual path.

Since he moved to the United States 25 years ago with the love of his life, his wife Asha, he has served on faculties of leading educational institutions in California, teaching in graduate and post-graduate programs for 15 consecutive years.

The phrase “it’s always darkest before the dawn” has enlightened the life of Russill, who is also the author of a revealing literary work, The Yoga of Sound: Playing the Hidden Power of Music and Singing, and “Jesus in the Lotus: The Mystical Gate Between Christianity and Yogic Spirituality.

As a musician, he has received acclaim for his singing, such as on his CDs Shakti: Tantric Embrace and Shabda: Mysticism and Mantras. He has recorded with many world-class musicians, including famed guitarist Brad Gillis of Night Ranger and the Indian master sarangi Ramesh Misra.

Paul has performed in some of the most prestigious international venues, including Propstei St. Gerold in Austria and Grant Park in Chicago, sharing the stage with great musicians like the legendary Arlo Guthrie and British rocker Arthur Brown. His most recent album, Mantra Magic, offers spiritual vibrations with touches of contagious and danceable music.

Russill Paul will offer a concert in San Miguel de Allende July 17 at the Teatro Ángela Peralta. Tickets are available at the theater.
