Enhance Your San Miguel Experience with the Architectural and Historical Walking Tours

San Miguel de Allende

By Betse Davies

If only the buildings in San Miguel could talk! Each one in the downtown area could tell you stories that would thrill and delight you. Your guide, Jay Moskowitz, can tell you some of those stories on the monthly Architectural Walking Tour on Thursday, June 16, at 10am. The tour, which leaves the Jardín directly across the street from the Parroquia, lasts two and one-half hours and is mostly on level ground. The donation for this special tour is 250 pesos. All tour monies go to Patronato Pro Ninos, which provides medical, dental, and psychological services for the needy children of San Miguel and the surrounding rural area of some 500 communities. One outstanding aspect of their work is the dental service, including three dental vans that serve the countryside, and the dental office in their small hospital.

Jay’s main emphasis will be on the different styles of the buildings, some of which go back more than 350 years and feature different details of construction that reflect the ideas and whims of many European kings and queens who opened their own architecture schools. There are also buildings that illustrate the mixture of two styles during a transition period. On the fringe of the downtown protected area you will see modern Mexican styles.

While Jay will give you some information on San Miguel history and the revolution as well, the English-speaking guides for our regular Historical Walking Tour are experts on the town’s history. You will be informed and entertained by this tour. You will get some architecture information, but the emphasis will be on the long colonial phase, the revolution against Spanish rule, the civil wars starting in 1910, and present day trends. These tours are offered every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  We meet in the Jardín across the street from the Parroquia at 9:45, and the tour leaves promptly at 10am and lasts two and one-half hours, with no serious hills. The donation for this tour is 200 pesos.

If you prefer a private tour, call or email Lily at info@patronatoproninos.org. The phone number during office hours is 152 7796. You can arrange a tour at almost any time of the day. Please call several days in advance. The private Historical Walking Tour costs 250 pesos for each person with a minimum of 1,000 pesos for one to four people, and 250 pesos for each additional person. The private Architectural Walking Tour donation is 300 pesos per person, with a minimum of 1,200 pesos for one to four people.
