Casa Hogar Corazón Valiente to bring Hope to Abandoned Children
By Barbara Rueda
As the world moves away from institutions, community-based care is a concept that is appealing to those who promote caring for abandoned children in a home-like environment. While supporting the operation and administration of various orphanages in San Miguel de Allende over the last four years, Barbara Rueda and Rodney Dye witnessed the importance of providing emotional stability and love to abandoned girls and boys. Inspired by their observations, Barbara and Rodney founded Casa Hogar Corazón Valiente (Brave Heart). Once built, Casa Hogar Corazón Valiente will become a nurturing environment where abandoned girls and boys will live in a small group of “casitas.” In these homes, there will be no more than six to eight children, who will be cared for by one consistent, supportive caregiver.
Years of academic research are all in agreement that children grow best in families. Ultimately, Casa Hogar Corazon Valiente should be able to care for 40 girls and boys who will be raised in a small group setting with the assistance of extended family, neighbors, friends, and church members. The goal of the program is to equip, inspire, and mobilize the community to build relationships with at-risk children in San Miguel. Relationships will grow through maintaining stable and personal relationships with these families, and providing counseling, as well as overall encouragement.
With help from the community, Casa Hogar Corazón Valiente’s programs can become the “voice of action” and can ensure that these children receive food, medical care, education, counseling, and the hope for a sound future. Fortunately, funding for the acquisition of land and campus buildings has already been secured.
In preparation to receive our first 6 to 8 girls by this summer, we are now fundraising to equip and furnish Corazon Valiente. We need everything from serving utensils to beds and mattresses.
Due to the immediate fundraising needs, San Miguel Angels for Education, a nonprofit located in SMA, has agreed to support Corazón Valiente with earnings from their Fourth Annual Charity Golf Tournament “Ventanas de Oportunidad” held at Ventanas de San Miguel Golf & Resort on July 2, 2016. San Miguel Angels For Education supports and invests in the education of children living in orphanages and provides access to private primary, secondary, and higher education. It delivers the tools for student success through technology, bilingual education, tutoring, and relationships with mentors. This process provides not only crucial academic preparation, but also instills critical self-esteem to empower tomorrow’s leaders.
Over the years, Ventanas de Oportunidad Charity Golf Tournament has earned a reputation for being a fabulous event for golfers and non-golfers alike. This year, Los Hijos de Frida, an amazing music group, will perform at the catered Award Ceremony Luncheon and silent auction. Fine art, jewelry, hotel and vacation accommodations, home décor, restaurant gift certificates, clothing, and much more will be available.
