Islam in Sweden

By David Johanssen

The worsening conflict in Syria and Iraq is sending millions of refugees into Europe, testing the limits of Europe’s compassion. Sweden has garnered a reputation as one of the most generous countries when it comes to providing sanctuary to immigrants. On a per capita basis, Sweden welcomes the highest number of refugees in all of Europe. This commitment to philanthropic pursuits is admirable, but such compassion has also inspired xenophobia. Hate crimes have risen in Sweden as more dangerous elements have entered the country, and rival gangs fight over turf. The influx of refugees has had a profound impact on the Swedish landscape.

Wednesday, June 1, at 5pm we present “Islam in Sweden,” and we will discuss how the refugee crisis is affecting Sweden. The new documentary Salam Alaikum Sweden examines this increasingly volatile situation which has many crying foul over the country’s lax immigration policies and calling for stricter border control policies. 50 pesos.

Friday, June 3, at 5pm: Yogis of Tibet. Tibet, the land of snows, is cradled in the cloud of fable. It was a place unknown to the world beyond its mountain walls for nearly a millennium. Exotic tales abounded about these unearthly people on the vast plateau embraced by the mountains. But it was not a land to be entered abruptly by outsiders. Inaccessible and remote, Tibet remained a mysterious figment in western imagination. We will discuss the traditions and practices of the yogis after the film. 50 pesos.

Saturday, May 28, at 5pm: Michael Moore Hates America. A documentary film directed by Mike Wilson that criticizes the work of film director Michael Moore. Wilson’s main criticism is that Moore misrepresents the truth by staging events and deftly cutting sequences to distort the truth. Michael Wilson is trying to get an interview with a multimillionaire; however, in this case, that millionaire is Michael Moore himself. 50 pesos.
