Fluorosis Epidemic in the Rural Communities

By Dr. Cedric McMillan

An epidemic in San Miguel de Allende, known as fluorosis, is sweeping the poor communities and this has gone unnoticed for years.

Dr. Cedric McMillan, President and Founder of the Association Civil, DentalMex Plan, A.C., is pioneering a project to bring awareness to this oral health problem, which is affecting the children in these communities. Fluorosis is directly related to the high concentration of arsenic, fluoride, mercury and other toxic elements found in the drinking water in these communities.

The DentalMex Plan, A.C. has spent a great deal of time using its own resources in the community of Agustin Gonzalez and, with its team of dentists and assistants, examined 314 children in the secondary and high school (Telesecundaria No. 546 and Bachillerato SABES) and surreptitiously discovered that 296 children (94 per cent) have mild to advanced fluorosis.

Fluorosis destroys calcium in bones and teeth leaving them fragile and brittle.

Dr. McMillan and DentalMex Plan, A.C., want to bring awareness of this epidemic and are soliciting help (donations) to treat these children. Please help us by making a donation: Tel: 415 137 342. Office: (415) 121 2361.
