Essentials of Tai Chi and Qigong, “Part 1: The Snake and the Crane”

By Frank Simons

This course is a guided exploration of the many facets of two ancient Chinese energetic arts, so called because at the heart of both practices is the belief in an intrinsic life energy known as qi, “spirit breath” or “life force.” Tai chi chuan is a martial art based on unique principles, including an emphasis on developing qi mastery. Qigong practice is developing greater awareness and control over the inner life energy for therapeutic and healing purposes. Recently both practices have received renewed attention because many research institutions have published articles touting the superior health benefits of tai chi and qigong.

Each lecture includes segments in which you will be led through simple yet energizing qigong exercises, as well as easy tai chi practices, to get you into the flow. Each of the 24 lectures includes learning one movement in the routine known as the 24-movement Yang short form; by the end of the course you will have learned the entire routine.

The course begins with an overview of the most essential features of tai chi and qigong. Foremost is the philosophy of balance and harmony that provides a continuous connecting theme throughout most of the topics in this—from the use of weapons in tai chi to applying principles of tai chi in the business arena.

Some lectures cover the health and fitness benefits of practice. You will learn about many research projects that studied tai chi’s effects on almost every disease. Every study shows at least two undisputed claims: tai chi and qigong have positive health effects on multiple levels, and there are no known side effects or contraindications associated with their use. In addition to their health and fitness benefits, tai chi and qigong are traditionally taught as self-cultivation or self-development practices. By embracing the philosophy of balance and harmony, you can learn to make every aspect of life happier, healthier, more compassionate and successful. In the final third of the course, you will explore how tai chi and qigong can be used to live a better life in the contemporary Western world.

This course offers a comprehensive overview of tai chi and qigong. It covers topics that are commonly written about and also many aspects often known only to advanced students of these martial arts. The goal of this course is to capture your interest and imagination and to entice you to weave these practices into your lifestyle.

David-Dorian Ross, the founder and CEO of Taijifit, leads the course. He has a BA in Human Movement Studies from San Francisco State University and has trained in China with championship martial arts coaches. Mr. Ross is the host of the PBS series T’ai Chi: Health and Happiness and the author of five books on health and wellness, including Exercising the Soul.

There will be an opportunity for discussion following the video. Presentations of the Center are offered without charge. Donations are gratefully accepted.
