Danzón Is Good Business!

By Leonardo Rosen

Danzón is good business. No, not here in San Miguel. For most native Sanmiguelenses, it is something from the old days that nobody does now. Most foreign residents have never heard of it, since it virtually doesn’t exist outside of Cuba and Mexico. Thus, how could they possibly know that on the national level, the danzón is most definitely good business?

Dr. Claudia Llanas and I were just recently in the port of Veracruz. We thought to attend there the muestra nacional (national exhibition) of the national danzón organization, CNIDDAC. This is what we had done every year. However, we started to see announcements in Facebook for a rival muestra nacional in Boca del Río, the city that shares the Veracruz metropolitan area, and on the same dates! This one was presented by Danzonera La Playa, a venerable orchestra that is a symbol of Veracruz. We asked ourselves, why would Danzonera La Playa take such a risk, challenging a well-established major event? Won’t one or both of these events suffer as a result?

We knew so many people involved in both of these events. We had to choose, and we decided to go with the “rebels,” that is to say, the Primera Muestra Nacional del Danzón de Boca del Río 2016. Which event failed? Neither. They both were tremendous successes! Why and how? So many danzoneros came from all over the country, thousands in fact, that there were more than enough people to fill up the sites of all the events presented by both factions. This multitude of danzoneros also filled up hotels and restaurants in these twin cities. Was this good business? No, it was tremendous business! And, these events are held successfully all over Mexico. Why not San Miguel de Allende?

In the meantime, we present our “mom & pop” fun event, “El Danzón y Otros Ritmos Bailables con el Club de Danzón Mercerina” in the Jardín Principal of San Miguel, Sunday, May 29, 5–8pm, free admission. Please call 152 6385 or 154 5840 for more information. We play absolutely the best danzón and other Latin music for your dancing pleasure. Some folks just like to watch. That’s good, too. ¡Rico y Suave!
