Making the “Pocha Nostra” Ours, Political Performance at Kuntshaus

By Cecilia Garibi

To put the bodies in action with a political-communicative-incisive intention makes transformational moments possible for whoever participates in the game of being the observer and the one exposed.

Santa Fe 22A, Colonia Allende

“La Pocha Nostra” performance has been characterized more than 10 years for exploding the borders that limit the possible shapes of autonomy and appropriation in all senses. It transcends the obvious limit of the static esthetic while including bodies in dynamic rebellion before the artistic “disciplines,” nationality, languages, sexuality, and other types of regimen. Thus, the established parameters (impossible to fulfill to the T by anyone) have been defied.

Bodies talk, bodies cry, bodies enjoy militancy. While evoking the power of the metaphor as a social protest, Gómez Peña and Saúl García provoke, with the temporary addition of people who congregate. It is the defiance of the univocal, the unique mandate. Spanglish is the neo-language with which we relate to each other in this place. The exchange and collaboration always follow each other in the interstices. Cross over; there are no unbridgeable borders. We cross over all the time because we are permeable hybrids. We call that which makes us vibrate artivism. And to make it possible, Kunsthaus Santa Fe opens its doors to the live art laboratory that the Mexican-American collective “La Pocha Nostra” presents to the artistic, technical, political, and all dissident communities to experience the exchange of radical pedagogical space that will take place in Colonia Allende from May 16 through 21.

Kunsthaus Countercultural Space, Plata Performance Nightclub, and Colectivo 41 accept “la Pocha Nostra” as a radical act by convening an encounter to secure synergies between artist and rebellious activist and form a web in the margins of the established.
