Audubon Birdwalk at Richly Varied Río Laja Site

Green San Miguel

Audubon leads a birdwalk on the third Sunday of every month. This month, that’s the 15th, the day after tomorrow. With leaders Luke Rich and Norman Besman, we’ll bird along a tree-shaded trail by the Río Laja, near the bridge on the new road to Guanajuato. In addition to the wooded river trail, the varied habitat includes open farmland with big trees and lots of sky for raptors.

Sun, May 15, 7:45am–Noon
Meets in front of Instituto Allende
Ancha de San Antonio 20
Members free, non-members 150 pesos or US$15

Along the river, we’ll look for Green Kingfishers, Green Herons, and our two wading egrets, Snowy and Great. In the past, we’ve seen other waders, such as White-faced Ibis, American Avocet, and Great Blue Heron, as well as a Black-crowned Night Heron, which, with its shorter legs, likes to perch in trees overlooking the water.

Also in the trees, we’ll look for such colorful songbirds as Blue and Black-headed Grosbeaks; a lingering warbler or two: Yellow or Audubon’s Yellow-rumped, for example; and Hooded or Scott’s Orioles. We’re almost certain to see our resident Vermilion Flycatcher, Bronzed Cowbird, and Great Kiskadee. Over the nearby farm fields, we may spot a resident Crested Caracara or Turkey Vulture.

The walk is open to all birders, beginning and experienced alike. Wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes and bring water and a hat. We’ll have our newly revised Bird Guide—which focuses on the birds most commonly found in the San Miguel area—for sale. Our guides carry telescopes so that everyone can see distant birds clearly, and we’ll also have a few pairs of binoculars to lend.

Carpooling is essential, so if you have a car, please bring it. Plan to arrive at 7:45am as we leave promptly at 8am. You’ll be back about noon with new entries for your life list and new birding friends. Steady rain cancels. For more information, visit our website at
