In March this year the expansion of the Bajío International Airport was announced. Currently it operates 9 flights per hour, and it is expected that after the expansion, 22 flights will be operated.
Information provided by governor Miguel Márquez Márquez observes that in the tourism sector, Guanajuato received 65 million visitors in the last three years, both Mexican and foreign, who generated revenue of 200 billion pesos. In addition that sector generated 155,000 jobs. Márquez highlighted that in 2015 the National Secretary of Tourism ranked Guanajuato sixth among the most visited states. In the last three years, BJX received more than 4 million passengers, which motivated the private and public sector to invest 270 million pesos to amplify and improve the current facilities this year.
During the 2016 Tianguis Turístico celebrated in Tequila, Jalisco, Enrique Peña Argüelles, administrator of BJX, said that the International Airport of Guanajuato has almost doubled the number of passengers in the last three years. For that reason, the investment will be targeted to the enlarging the waiting room, which will have 1000 more square meters to offer more comfort to passengers.
The BJX airstrip will be modified. It is expected that the current 9 operations per hour will increase to 22 flights per hour within the next five years.
