Festival of the Seeds
Smile, You Are in San Miguel
By Jade Arroyo
Complementing Children’s Day on April 30, the Festival of the Seed took place for the fourth time. Juarez Park was the backdrop for this totally free event. In addition to the distribution of organic seeds, the celebration of ancestral knowledge was shared among those attending, with due respect for nature, tradition, and soulful food.
This event took place throughout the day, starting at 9am. It included registration and seed donations, roundtable discussions, children’s activities, workshops, music, theater, food, and fun.
SOMOS SEMILLA (We are seed) were participants. Their presentations included a talk at the legume seed conservation workshop and distribution of their seed library. Their primary mission is the conservation of seeds in San Miguel de Allende.
It was an event full of spirit, where people gathered to protect and defend the seeds, ecology, and our ancestral, natural foods, in order to perpetuate Mexican culture and our seeds. Attendees were encouraged to start their own gardens with the seeds received and exchanged at this festival.
