SMU Initiates New Mentorship Program in Auto Mechanics
By Gloria Roth
SMU (Sanmiguelenses Unidos), whose mission is to promote security and safety awareness in our community, is kicking off a mentorship program to place teenage boys and girls in a safe, exciting, and rewarding working environment under the guidance and direction of a capable mentor. Initially, we are focusing on the automotive industry.
We have 10 internship positions available this summer with several of San Miguel de Allende’s leading automotive repair and auto body shops. The top intern will accompany the Euro-Latino racing team during the Carrera PanAmericano.
Mentoring, at its core, guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter. Research confirms that quality-mentoring relationships have powerful positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic, and professional situations. Ultimately, mentoring connects a young person to personal growth and development, and social and economic opportunity.
Mentees will be paid a weekly stipend plus travel expenses. A three-month commitment is required. The mentor and mentee will sign a contract stating the specific terms of each individual situation. SMU will facilitate the introduction, and contract and do periodic evaluations to determine whether learning goals are being met and that the mentor-mentee relationship is satisfying on both ends.
