Danza Viral’s HEME
By Margaret Failoni
I just came home from HEME, a fantastic, far too short, exciting, exhilarating, beautifully produced dance performance at the Teatro Ángela Peralta by our own home grown, brilliant performers, the Danza Viral. The performance started out with a video on a huge screen of a dancer greeting the audience, and in a monotonously soothing voice, telling the audience to relax, get comfortable in the seats, close their eyes, breathe deeply, slowly, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale. The theater became quiet, the lights went out, and suddenly we were thrown into a surreal dream world of exquisite lighting effects, sensuous dance productions with beautiful and unusual costumes interspersed with videos of period dance performances. There were exquisitely costumed black birds in glittering black feather concoctions dancing to strange hypnotic percussions, dancing in unison numbers with the five dancers of the company, three girls and two guys.
One particularly well performed and well received number involved the two male performers, with black masks covering their entire heads, dressed in bright red shorts, socks, and tees, dancing giddily, provocatively in a fun and campy choreography. But perhaps the best was saved for last. Exhilarating music, part Eastern European gypsy, part Fiddler on the Roof, brought a fantastic dance number, acrobatic yet sensuous, spreading joy throughout the audience. The dancers leaped off the stage and danced up the aisles throwing flowers and kisses to the intoxicating rhythms of the music. The audience literally went wild and gave the group a standing ovation. What a wonderful night! Pity it didn’t last longer, and unbelievable that it was a one-night-only performance.
The excellent choreography, video material, and costume designs were by Freddy Ayón, with the costumes produced by Ceśar Luna. The dancers in the company were Freddy Ayón, Nicolas Fallon, Andrea Holguín, Kimberly Medina, and Diana Vizcaya. I look forward to seeing more of this very gifted dance company.
