International Dance Day 2016

By Margot Sunev

International Dance Day was established by the International Dance Council CID. Recognized by UNESCO, the CID is the official organization for all forms of dance in all countries. In 1982 the CID chose April 29 as the official world dance day.

International Dance Day 2016
Fri, Apr 29, 10am–8:30pm
El Sindicato
Recreo 4

This year International Dance Day will be celebrated by millions of dancers worldwide. The purpose of Dance Day is to attract the attention of a wider public to the art of dance.

Patty Arrieta, a professional dancer from New York City and artistic director of Danza Arrieta Dance, is organizing an event for the San Miguel de Allende community. This year marks the fourth annual  “free day of dance.” I sat down with Patty to discuss this year’s celebration.

Margot Sunev: What are you planning for International Dance Day 2016?

Patty Arrieta: I’m excited to be collaborating with El Sindicato, along with some of San Miguel’s talented instructors, for this year’s event. We will have free classes happening all day, for all ages and levels.

MS: What are some of the classes being offered?

PA: Arabian, African, ballet, capoeira, circus, contemporary, contempojazz, creative dance, hip hop, Latin rhythms, swing, tribal belly dance, and yoga. We are also offering a mommy (or daddy) and baby African dance class.

MS: When and where is the event?

PA: Wednesday, April 29, at El Sindicato, Recreo 4. All classes are free and open to the public. You can take as many classes as you want that day.

MS: Where can people get more information, including the schedule?

PA: You can stay up to date at my Facebook page: Danza Arrieta Dance. There will be a schedule of classes posted at El Sindicato and fliers around town. You can also send me an email, and I’ll pass on the schedule and more info:

PA: Thanks to El Sindicato for hosting the event and the great teachers participating this year! We hope the community will join us and take advantage of the opportunity to try a new class and celebrate the joy dance brings.
