Concert of Celebration, International Jazz Day
Sat, Apr 30, 7pm
Teatro Ángela Peralta
350/250/150 pesos

Leading musicians of different nationalities will share their music: Lady Zen, Robert Kaplan, and Rick Shlosser from the US; Ken Basman from Canada; Alfred Thompson from Cuba; and from Mexico, Uriel Orozco and Antonio Lozoya (director of this festival, recognized as the winner of the National Program for Performing Arts artist 2014 by the National Fund for Culture and the Arts, FONCA).

Enjoy the talent of these great musicians for the first time together: the extraordinarily rich voice of Lady Zen, the experience and musical maturity of drummer and singer Robert Kaplan (Gato Barbieri, Dexter Gordon, Etta Jones), the musicality of guitarist Ken Basman (Lila Downs, Brice Winston, Dave Pike), the special sound of the saxophone by Alfred Thompson (Irakere, Omara Portuondo, Ibrahim Ferrer), and in the rhythm section, pianist/keyboardist Uriel Orozco (Pila Seca, King Solomon Hicks, Randy Singer), drummer Rick Shlosser (Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, James Taylor), and bassist Antonio Lozoya (Paul McCandless, Othello Molineaux, Art Lande).

Jazz is much more than music. It is a lifestyle and an instrument of dialogue and even of social change. The history of jazz tells the story of the power of music to bring together artists from different cultures and backgrounds, as conductors of integration and mutual respect. In times of change and uncertainty, we need the power of jazz more than ever to bring people together and strengthen respect for shared values. The new generations need tools that send a message of peace to the heart, and jazz is one of them.

In November 2011, during the General Conference of UNESCO, the international community proclaimed April 30 as International Jazz Day. The celebration of this show aims to sensitize the public about the virtues of jazz as an educational tool and as an engine for peace, unity, dialogue, and strengthening cooperation between peoples.

We will enjoy a musical journey on which different styles of jazz will be presented, such as the influence of blues from the United States, the Latin of Cuba and Mexico, and of course great themes of traditional jazz majestically executed by participants in this musical evening. It will be an opportunity to listen to these great musicians who celebrate in every performance that jazz represents peace and unity.

Tickets can be purchased at the box office at the Angela Peralta Theater (Hernandez Macías and Mesones, 152 2200) and in the tienda of La Biblioteca (Insurgentes 25, Col. Centro, 152 7305).
