Meet the Artists of “An Artist Sampler” at Café Muro

An Artist Sampler

By Philip Louis Phillips

It’s once again my privilege to work with four other artists to bring to fruition the show “An Artist Sampler.” During the month of April, “An Artist Sampler” will showcase current art from five San Miguel residents at the Galería Muro, situated in Café Muro at  Loreto 10B in Centro (closed Wednesdays). Meet and greet will be held on Thursday, April 21.

This international group represents not only diverse backgrounds and nationalities but also various art methods and media. Carlos Muro, owner of Cafe Muro, is both a painter and photographer. In this show he presents two B&W photographic set pieces, which look at the “rebirth” of the self after a brush with mortality. Rafael Almaguer Valadez’ colorful photographs, on the other hand, explore imagery of the human form within the dominating environment.

Straddling the notion of fine art and illustration in much of her work by mixing painterly and graphic illustration, Isis Rodriguez presents work in this show that is primarily illustrative, presenting the everyday stories of life and culture in Mexico and in San Miguel in particular. Her work also represents the rising place of the graphic novel and the graphic style in contemporary art and culture. Yuko Warashina combines installation and assemblage for an environmental approach to art. Her three pieces form an installation group in the Galería while being able to stand alone as works themselves. My own work is primarily mixed media, concentrating on figurative work and book-related arts, as much about the process of art as it is about the subject of selves and expression.

We five artists, as a group, represent several of the major concerns of both twentieth and twenty-first century art, utilizing forms and methods of fine art that only began to see legitimacy in the twentieth century and continue to be explored today as avenues of artistic expression. Photography, mixed media, illustration, assemblage, and installation are not only linked by such “new” forms as collage with traditional and uncommon materials; they also resonate off each other, spinning off into new art formations that are only starting to be explored.

“An Artist Sampler” will be on view throughout April, while the meet the artists event will be held this coming Thursday, April 21, from 2 to 4 pm. The public is invite to attend for free.
