And they know their subject. They can tell you about the many styles of architecture to be seen in the downtown area on the tour route, stories about the people who lived in the buildings, why some buildings contain mixtures of several styles, and why the styles changed in the first place. Some of the buildings figured prominently in the War for Independence which started in 1810. Imagine Boston with all the Revolutionary structures in place; most are long gone or surrounded by modern edifices. When you stop and think about it, San Miguel de Allende is a pretty special place! Only the name of the town has changed over the years, from San Miguel de Chichimecas (1542), to San Miguel el Grande in the1600s, to its present day name in honor of one of the organizers of the War for Independence, Ignacio Allende, whose birthplace is the finest Baroque house in San Miguel. The downtown area remains basically as it was originally. A few steps from the protected downtown area your guide will show you Mexican Modern; these buildings are in sharp contrast to the much older ones.

The tours are mostly level walking and last about two and a half hours. The donation for this outstanding tour goes to the work of Patronato Pro Ninos, which provides medical, dental, and psychological services for the needy children of San Miguel and the surrounding rural area of some 500 communities.

Our regular historical walking tour guides are experts on the town’s history. We have been offering these tours for some 25 years. All of our guides are English-speaking volunteers for Patronato Pro Ninos. Your entire donation will go towards the essential work of this organization. The tours are offered on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The donation for this tour is 200 pesos. There will be enough guides to ensure small groups.

If you prefer a private tour, call or email Lily at info@patronatoproninos.org. The phone number during office hours is 152 7796. You can arrange a tour at almost any time of day. Please allow several days to arrange your tour. The private historical tour is 250 pesos for each person with a minimum of 1,000 pesos for one to four persons, 250 pesos for each additional person. The private architectural tour donation is 300 pesos with a minimum of 1,200 pesos for one to four persons.
