Smile, You Are in San Miguel

By Jade Arroyo

Colectivo 41 is the first youth-led organization for the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community in San Miguel de Allende, having the mission of empowering and supporting the gay community and youth in SMA through medical, psychological, and educational assistance. This independent and nonprofit organization is self-sustained through donations and fund-raising.

During the first weekend of April, a special party was thrown under the name of “It’s All About Love.” It was a celebration of how diverse and textured we all are, creating bonds and visibility with all the community. Information about C41 was shared, testimonies were given from people who have been part of the organization and who have even become agents of change within their communities through political advocacy, community mobilization, and educational initiatives. There was also a lot of conversation and laughter promoted by the cheerful 50 peso open bar. The music was offered by Lady Zen, Miss Aquiatius Funk, Frans Bloem’s cabaret show, eL Hilo jazz band, and DJ Smith.

Colectivo 41 provides LGBTQ youth with a safe, inclusive, and affirming environment where they can foster positive relationships, learn, and work as a collective, utilizing community organizing and activism tools to create change in the San Miguel community.
