This week at Shelter

By David Johanssen

The Shelter Theater is hosting the final venue of the El Juan’s Farewell Tour 2016, a concert-jam Sunday, March 27, 7pm. All proceeds will go to the new guitar program at the Casa Hogar orphanage in Mexiquito. Shelter regulars “El Juan” ( aka Shane Gibson) and Tom Driscoll are partnering with a bevy of local musicians in a night of culturally exotic exuberance. “This is the big one,” said El Juan, “One last blow-out to cap off my five-year musical odyssey in San Miguel. The music will sizzle with emotion. It will touch your heart and soul and haul you to your feet.” El Juan’s Farewell Tour with Tom Driscoll, Sunday, March 27, at 7pm. Tickets available at the Biblioteca and online at 150 pesos.

Tickets available at the Biblioteca and online at 150 pesos.

Friday, April 1, “Reader’s Theater” returns as four of San Miguel’s finest actors read the complex, Obie Award-winning play, Sight Unseen, what the New York Times calls, “a commentary on the sacrifices entailed in getting older and getting ahead” in the super-competitive art world. Just good actors, reading great plays! 7pm, 50 pesos.

You asked for more Cheers Bar and we listened! With so much talent in San Miguel, now Open Mic happens two days a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 pm. Now you’ll have twice the chance to either perform or just watch our rising stars come out to shine! 50 pesos (30 pesos for performers), includes drink on Tuesdays, free admission Thursdays.

Shelter Theater is part of the Shelter VG4 Cultural Center, located at Vicente Guerrero 4, a short walk from the Jardin down Insurgentes. Telephone 154 7524 or visit to see upcoming events. Taxi service available. Shelter VG4’s theater and class/performance space are available for rent. We are the home of the San Miguel Table Tennis Club—come play with us!
