Colectiva 2016: A New Art Show at YAM Gallery
By Marie Moébius
YAM Gallery inaugurates a new contemporary art show on Wednesday, March 23. The group show gives a big place to figurative painting. The two talented painters Miguel Angel Garrido and Antonio Chaurand will present their latest oils on canvas. Both former students of Instituto Allende, they have in common the passion for hyper-realistic representation of everyday life. We love the casual scenes depicted by Garrido. This artist, born in 1982 in Mexico City, has been working ultimately on a new, very small format: friends gathering in a bar at night or dogs running free at La Presa take life in a 4 x 8 inch canvas, a real performance! On the other hand, Antonio is the master of interior scenes and artificial light. He manages dramatic backlights and shadows with a photographic eye and an outstanding skill.

YAM Gallery’s agenda has been busy this year with its participation in the contemporary art fair Zona MACO in Mexico City. The group show Colectiva 2016 includes the works of two artists shown at Zona MACO in YAM’s booth: Javier Areán and Massinissa Selmani. Areán’s paintings are part of his new project titled “Madrid 55.” Those oils on canvas and wood are views of his grandfather’s house built in the ’50s in Mexico City neighborhood of Coyoacan. The artist reconstructs his identity through the remembrance of the building in beautiful faded colors.
On his side, Massinissa Selmani (Algiers, 1980) has also shown his drawings at Maco 2016. His latest series brings his elegant line, describing absurd situations that are certainly to be related to the terrible news of the migrants in Europe. After winning a special mention at the 2015 Venice Biennale, Selmani’s works have found the international spotlight: his drawings are also to be seen at Art Dubai in March (If you can’t go to Dubai, come to YAM Gallery!).
Another artist, another art fair: Colectiva 2016 includes in preview the work of Adam Chamandy, who has been selected to participate with YAM Gallery in Art Lima 2016, the contemporary art fair of Peru. Chamandy has a very peculiar way to craft his paintings as technology would do them. His obsessive work with aerograph on wood or canvas calls up pointillism in a contemporary manner.
These art works are shown for the first time in San Miguel. Colectiva 2016 is a great way to get a view of the contemporary creation today. It’s a must-see this week!
