Chikis, Our New Love
From the SPA
By Linda Rodríguez
About a year after we lost the beloved dog we had had for 17 years, my husband and I decided it was time to open our hearts to another dog. We went to the SPA, and although we know that adopting a dog cannot be based on “first in, first out,” we thought it should at least be a factor. So we asked to meet two of the residents that had been there the longest. Lynn had us answer a very comprehensive questionnaire (which included some stuff that I would never have thought to ask, but which was important when considering adopting a dog). It just exemplified the level of dedication and caring of the staff at the SPA. Lynn then showed us two lovely dogs and let us spend a little time with each of them. We went home to consider which was the right one for us.
We were back a couple of days later and told Lynn that we wanted to adopt Chikis, an adorable, loving girl who had been there for five years (one of the mysteries of the universe was that she had yet to be adopted). She knew a number of commands and welcomed you with a full body wiggle—she was just a love! (We were the lucky beneficiaries of the time spent with, and love given to Chikis by Harry, one of the volunteers.) We all decided that it would be best if we came back a couple of more times to spend time with her, so that she was familiar with us, before we took her home.
We have been astonished at how quickly she has adapted to her new life. She is just an affectionate, smart dog and so quick to learn the do’s and don’ts of her new digs. When we first met her, we were a little concerned at her energy level; however, she has mellowed out completely (just look at the picture of her basking in the sun). She has turned into an on-the-sofa-with-her-head-in-my-lap dog, and what could be better than that? We are just pinching ourselves that we are so lucky to have this wonderful dog in our lives. If you are thinking of adopting a dog, please check out some of the older SPA residents (Los Pinos 7, 152 6124, 11c2, Monday–Saturday). They deserve consideration. And who knows, you may end up as fortunate as we were, with the new love of your life!
