Snow in Los Picachos
By Jesús Aguado
Those who are not from San Miguel criticized the excitement of Sanmiguelenses who happily shared their photos of snow on social media.
Old-timers remember that the first time snow fell in Los Picachos was between February and March 1978. The next time was in 2009, and most recently, this week.
The snowfall was caused by the combination of two cold fronts plus a winter storm. At 8pm on Wednesday, March 9, it started snowing in the upper area of the city, and early the next morning, sleet fell on the historic center.
Due to the weather conditions, the State Secretariat of Education ordered the cancellation of classes for two days for basic-level students in primary, secondary, and preparatory school. Consequently, entire families decided to go to the Picachos. Families that would otherwise never have experienced snow, headed upward, disregarding the local administration’s recommendation not to climb the mountains for safety reasons.
