Smile, You Are in San Miguel
By Jade Arroyo
La Biblioteca (public library) is one of the cultural arteries of the San Miguel community where locals and visitors of different ages and occupations converge. It’s a community center where youngsters find an outlet for their creativity through books, free art workshops, language classes, and a buffet of cultural expressions such as concerts, plays, exhibitions, and films.
Although this place is more than a library, its book services are worth noting: it holds a wide collection of books and DVDs in Spanish and English, plus some interesting volumes in French and German. It is the second largest-library in Mexico of books in English. It also has a shop/bookstore where you can find new books by local authors, as well as an extensive collection of used books for sale. You can find other treasures there as well. The labyrinthine building contains a quiet courtyard, a reading room, a small theater and film forum, a computer center offering instruction and wireless internet, a gift shop and bookstore, and a café and restaurant operated by a young San Miguel staff.
The Biblioteca is a self-sustainable civil association that generates scholarships and programs from community donations and membership. Don’t miss paying La Biblioteca a visit.
Insurgentes 25, open Monday to Friday 10am–7pm and Saturdays from 10am–2pm.
