Tomorrow’s Leaders Today: Norma María de Jesús Gómez García
By Robin Loving
In our ongoing series of Tomorrow’s Leaders Today, Jóvenes Adelante presents one of our graduates, Norma María de Jesús Gómez García.
Norma grew up in La Loma de la Purisima with her mom, a housewife; her dad, a rancher; and three siblings. Her mother had completed elementary school, but her dad had not been so fortunate.
A friend told her about Jóvenes Adelante, which grants scholarships to A-level students who otherwise could not afford to attend university with the goal of breaking the cycle of poverty in their families. The Jóvenes Adelante support package includes a laptop, a mentor, psychological counseling, life skills, English tutoring, and a graduate network. During Norma’s academic career, she had three mentors.
When she graduated in June of 2015, Norma became a CPA. A friend told her about a job, so she is now an accounting assistant at a broccoli farm. “I could not have gone to university without the help of Jóvenes Adelante,” said Norma. “Being able to talk to my mentors about absolutely anything got me through a lot of uncertain times,” she continued.
This quick young lady is still in touch with her mentors. “I am still surprised that they have such a powerful dedication to people that would otherwise not be part of their lives,” said Norma. “Their encouragement gave me a personal presence, professionalism, and self esteem that I didn’t have before,” she said. “I aspire to work in an even larger company some day in order to advance my learning,” continued Norma. “And, I want to help those who want to know what I didn’t at a younger age.” Now she enjoys giving back by presenting to prospective Jóvenes Adelante students, and she feels fortunate to have peers from her Jóvenes Adelante days.
Jóvenes Adelante currently has applications from around 80 A-level students like Norma. Typically, half of those applicants will be deemed eligible for an interview. Half of those, or 20, will pass Jóvenes Adelante’s rigorous screening process to become eligible for a 2016 scholarship.
Currently, Jóvenes Adelante has sponsors for only 14.5 of those prospective 20 students who want to begin university in a few months. Sponsorships are US$7,000 or equivalent over a five-year period, and are tax deductible in the US and Canada.
