Smile, You Are in San Miguel

By Jade Arroyo

The Concurso San Miguel took place last Saturday, March 5, for the seventh time. It showcased some of its best performances ever.

This yearly event is the highlight of Opera San Miguel, which aims to promote emerging Mexican talent while helping to perpetuate this beautiful musical and performing art. The principal mission of Opera San Miguel is to discover and assist in developing the careers of the most talented and promising young opera singers in Mexico. All the prize money awarded is raised privately in San Miguel de Allende, primarily through the generosity of individual donors, the Angels of Opera San Miguel.

The Concurso was held at the Ángela Peralta Theater, which honors one of the most famous Mexican opera singers. The venue was filled with opera lovers in their best attire, the row of “Angels,” and an expert jury.

Ten of the most talented young opera singers in Mexico competed for more than 200,000 pesos in career grants and performing opportunities. After a preliminary round of auditions, the finalists were invited to participate in a week of musical, dramatic, and language coaching; master classes; aria preparation and career development counseling, all conducted by a distinguished group of opera luminaries who donate their time and experience at no cost to the singers.
