Smile, You Are in San Miguel

By Jade Arroyo

Casa de los Angeles is a local self-sustainable nonprofit which provides a safe educational environment for small children from San Miguel. It is a day-care for little angels that provides an integral service, combining health care, education, nutrition, and support and counseling for single mothers. This institution serves over 200 moms and kids on a daily basis and has done that for 15 years. The philosophy has always been to empower people and help them to become strong and independent, based on collaboration with the group.

In México there is a popular custom of celebrating the quinceañera (15 years). The community threw a big 15th anniversary party for Casa de los Ángeles. A large, colorful party was filled with infant joy, music, folk dancing, shared food, and laughter. There were performances by the kids (amazingly attired by the proud moms), the Tuna Tradicional, mariachis, a fun raffle, and a silent auction. The celebration was held at the Casa de los Angeles facilities, located in Santa Julia. This was also an occasion to give a big thank you to co-director Donna Quathamer for all the fantastic work done through the years.
