Recovering the Acoustic Shell
By Jesús Aguado
Six million pesos will be invested to conclude the construction of the Concha Acústica. The band shell was a project of the administration headed by Mayor Núñez. She previously told Atención that with this construction international-quality events could be attracted to increase tourism. It was to have a capacity of 10,000 people and would cost 21 million pesos. Construction was in charge of Tegusa S.A de C.V.
In January 2013, the administration, then headed by Mauricio Trejo, stopped this work because the tubular structure was bent by the weight of the concrete, and it could collapse. The city council approved the hiring of a specialist in structures who would determine the risks of using of the infrastructure and the financial viability of its completion. An auditor was also hired to find out if the public budget was due damages from the construction company.
The same month, the administration filed a criminal complaint of alleged embezzlement related to the construction. The case attracted the concern of the Specialized Agency of Crimes Committed by Public Servants. Alí Patlán, then coordinator of the legal department of the city hall, commented that the legal case was still in progress. In July 2013, he said that his office had sent 19 boxes of documents to the agency for the investigation. But it seems that the criminal complaint against Luz María Núñez never succeeded.
Although current mayor Ricardo Villarreal announced that six million pesos will be invested to complete the construction, he did not talk about the date for beginning or finishing the construction. He said that the money belonging to Sanmiguelenses was there, just being wasted, and it needed to be recovered. Mayor Villarreal noted that his administration has conducted an investigation to find out about the damage in the structure, and the results state that there is no such damage. “For that reason we will complete the project because it was decided in the past. What we cannot allow is to have the money of Sanmiguelenses wasted on white elephants or uncompleted work. We will see what the best use of this construction will be,” he said.
