Palliative Care in San Miguel

By Robin Loving

Palliative care is a multidisciplinary approach to specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress, and mental stress of a serious illness⎯whatever the diagnosis. When Dr. Maria de Lourdes Tejeida Bautista will share what palliative care options exist in San Miguel. The presentation will be free and in English, but Dr. Tejeida will be available to answer questions in Spanish as well.

Dr. Tejeida’s approach is to ensure the greatest quality of life and, if imminent, death, for patients. She is also very sensitive to patients’ families. “We are not talking about only the treatment of disease, but handling loss, whether that is physical, psychological, social, mental, fiscal, or spiritual,” says Dr. Tejeida, who focuses on giving patients as much functionality as possible by preventing and reducing suffering.

The interdisciplinary assistance she provides includes advice to doctors, social workers, nurses, and psychologists. Illnesses that might require these resources include cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, dementia, and stroke, to name some of the major ones. Dr. Tejeida works within the public, private, and nonprofit sectors with individuals and families when palliative care is needed.

Dr. Tejeida is a palliative care doctor with a master’s in public health and health administration. She is a teaching specialist with the University of León, and she is in charge of teaching palliative care throughout the state of Guanajuato. Her palliative care patients at the General Hospital with Seguro Popular receive reimbursements for all services, including medications. She saw around 500 patients last year alone.

Rotary unites neighbors, community leaders, and global citizens for the common good. Come to Rotary Tuesday, March 8, at 12:30pm at Hotel Misión, Salida a Querétaro 1. For more information, contact President David McGinnis at and see Dr. Tejeida may be reached at
