Those who were unable to get tickets for the sold-out final round of Concurso San Miguel 2016 need not despair. Opera San Miguel (OSM) will present a concert of the winners on March 19 at the Bellas Artes. “It has been one of my goals since becoming Artistic Director of Opera San Miguel in 2011 to be able to present a concert of our winners soon after the Concurso,” says John Bills. “The time is finally right as we cap our new In Concert! series with a program of arias, duets, and ensembles featuring our 2016 winners.”

“Concurso San Miguel is OSM’s flagship event, a national contest among the most gifted and promising young opera singers in Mexico. Tomorrow night’s (March 5) final round will see 11 finalists compete for more than 300,000 pesos in career grants and performing opportunities. But unlike the Concurso, where the finalists compete mano-a-mano, in the Winners Concert the singers will perform together in more extended scenes and ensembles, providing an exciting look at the true collaborative aspect of opera. I am confident that after tomorrow night’s results, we will be able to create an exciting and dramatic program featuring some of the greatest music ever composed for the operatic stage.”

Bills says the Winners Concert will showcase the versatility of the singers while at the same time providing them with valuable experience. “There is a strong educational component to everything we do on behalf of Mexico’s young singers. It’s not enough to stand and sing a beautiful aria. Singers need to perform in a wide variety of circumstances and repertoires in order to continue to grow as artists. This Winners Concert provides them another rung up the ladder of their success.”

“But let’s be clear,” Bills continues, “this is no mere academic exercise. This is going to be a thrilling experience for our audience—a chance to see these winners rise to new challenges, and prevail!”
