Bernie Sanders Fundraiser

By Martha Donnelly

“I believe in a society where all do well, not just a handful of billionaires.”

—Bernie Sanders

Afundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will be held on Thursday, March 3, at Sollano 45 from 5–7pm. The 2016 US election has the potential to transform the direction of our country from predatory capitalism based on wars and ravaging the earth’s resources into an economy that supports socially just political systems and environmentally sustainable and regenerative economic systems.

Bernie Sanders is the only candidate who makes clear his commitment to this vision. A short list of his positions include:

* Get big money out of politics and restore a true democracy
* Develop a fair and humane immigration policy
* Create decent paying jobs and a living wage for all
* Combat climate change to save our home, our planet
* Fight for racial justice, women’s rights, LGBT equality
* Care for our veterans
* Make Medicare available for all
* Strengthen and expand Social Security
* Lower the cost of prescription drugs
* Make college tuition free
* Reform Wall Street
* Improve the rural economy
* Create a robust peace economy

Bernie Sanders is a unique candidate. Not only does he have a specific platform for the reinvention of our democracy, but also he has galvanized a social movement. Although early on he was dismissed by punditry as not politically viable, the response of the electorate has been overwhelming. Clearly Sanders has tapped into the American citizenry’s very deep dissatisfaction with the injustice of our present economy.

So, regardless of one’s opinion of the candidates’ platforms, it is important that his voice stays strong within the debate. Even if not elected he can have an indelible impact on the ordinary citizen to hold government accountable. He is giving us the words, ideas, issues all of us need to go forward.

For these reasons I hope you can join us for a Bernie Sanders fundraiser. Once again it is Thursday, March 3, from 5–7 at calle Sollano 45. We suggest a US$50 donation but encourage you to give as much as you can. (Bring your checkbooks!) No one will be turned away for lack of funds. We realize that many of you have already given to the campaign, and we do not want to exclude the 99 percent!
