Support the Made in México Movement 14th Bazaar of Alternative Design SMA
By Jade Arroyo
We have a natural tendency to consume. However, if we cultivate habits of more conscious and responsible consumption by investing in quality products made to last a long time (rather than disposable ones, made unethically), we can generate greater sustainability in our lives, improve the national economy, and create more dignified work conditions.
14th Bazaar of Alternative Design
Saturday, Feb 20 and Sunday, Feb 21
Centro Cultural Allende
Ancha de San Antonio 30
(Between Organic Market and Instituto Allende)
The Bazaar of Alternative Design San Miguel seeks to be a forum in our city for creative independent projects. For more than two years, this organization has brought to San Miguel de Allende the work of young designers, artists, and craftsmen, introducing a breath of fresh air into the local scene with innovative and affordable ideas. This weekend, February 20 and 21, the bazaar comes back to the city in its 14th edition, with a selection of designers who will show a range of fashion, shoe wear, handbags, accessories, decor, fine jewelry, illustration, graphic art, and botanical items. Also, a gourmet area will feature the itinerant antojeria (place for street food) La K-cita and chocolates and floral jams by Tante Monique. We want to thank Machuca for illustration and design in creating our current image, which refers to the cusp of Aquarius and Pisces. We also thank plastic artist and cartonero, Marco Bautista, for his elaborate mojigangas (bigger than life puppets) and the special creation for this edition of a photographic set featuring colorful, imaginative papier-mâché. Come and take a picture with us between giant papier-mâché flowers! This is a pet-friendly event.
In November 2013 the Bazaar of Alternative Design was born. The bazaar concept began as a need for the organizers themselves (who are designers) to sell their products. Today it is a space for new talent that emerges in Mexico. In order to join, designers must go through a selection process in which quality, a good price, and being made in Mexico are qualities to be sought.
