La Belle France

Live French Concert with Pascal Monziea

By David Johanssen

“I am Charlie” was the rallying cry in 2015 to support Paris in its dark days of multiple terrorist attacks. Shelter shows its solidarity with “La Belle France” with two live concerts by Frenchman Pascal Monziea and Almitri Tzigane to celebrate the world’s favorite culture, presenting such timeless classics as “La Vie en Rose” by Edith Piaf, “La Mer” by Charles Trénet, and “Ne Me Quitte Pas” by Jacques Brel. Join us Fridays, February 19 and 26, at 7pm for “Chansons Pour Notre Ville.” 150 pesos.

The basic design of the acoustic guitar hasn’t changed in centuries, but accomplished local guitarist Jack Stillwater has other ideas, to be shared Wednesday, February 24, at 7pm as he unveils his romantic “Harp Guitar,” a radically-new 9-string guitar with a lush, full sound. Accompanied by his equally-talented partner, Frances, the man many consider San Miguel’s finest classical guitarist will play this gorgeous new instrument for the first time ever. 150 pesos.

Mark Twain is still considered one of America’s finest humorists, despite having lived in the 1800s. Relive his wit and wisdom, Saturday, February 20, at 5pm as Hal Holbrook brings him to life with his unforgettable one-man stage show. A discussion of Twain’s insights, still valid centuries later, will explore his undeniable contribution to American culture. 100 pesos with drink.

“Is It Safe?” is the theme of a live investing presentation by some of Mexico’s most authoritative economists, courtesy of Multiva, a top securities firm in Mexico City, Thursday, February 25, at 5pm. Bring your questions and concerns, not only about the peso and Mexican economy but where the world—and your money—are headed in 2016. Free, with refreshments.
