Come help Jovenes Adelante celebrate 15 years of granting scholarships to local A-level students who otherwise could not afford to attend university and bring their families out of poverty.

“It’s been great to continue to grow this organization; the kids are just superb,” said co-founder Phyllis Culp.

“I think the founders of JA would be pleased to see that their dream to give students a little help and support, and the freedom to succeed has become a successful reality, and as the first president of Jóvenes Adelante, A.C., I feel proud to see that this organization has grown and become established, while continuing in the spirit of those amazing founders,” said Amanda Ruiz.

“Virginia Wheelwright told me about Jovenes—such a simple idea—raising money for university for Mexican students who had done well in high school. So, I joined as treasurer. We had five students that year. The next year we had many more students and set up bank accounts for each. Then we provided mentors for each student and then English classes. Then, we got an office. We kept growing,” said Susi Beere.

“Now we have 59 students and have some outstanding professionals and volunteers helping us. I think of Esther Rocha, in charge of student programs, who works with individual students and organizes events so students can get to know each other; Stephanie Hough, past president, who attracts all sorts of helpful and generous people and lets us use her Smart Space for big meetings; and our new treasurers, Steve Jaffe and Tom Hall. From the beginning the money for becas came in from a few faithful donors and all sorts of fundraisers. Back then, I was looking for a way to improve the world a little and I found it,” concluded Beere.

We will begin with a meeting required by law to ratify officers elected by the board during the year and re-elect officers who are returning. Thereafter, each area will report on highlights of the year and exciting plans for the coming year, including a unique set of events called Dining for Destinies, which is being created by co-chairs Carol Jackson and Linda Desbiens. We are planning to fund 15 students in our 15th year, and  these events will be important to our fundraising efforts.

Around 12:30pm, the party will begin and key volunteers will be recognized before we cut the cake and enjoy our triumphs and forecasts. Parking is available on premises and on adjacent streets.
