A Day of Love and Friendship

By David Johanssen

On Valentine’s Day, Mexico celebrates “The Day of Love and Friendship,” in Spanish, El Día del Amor y la Amistad. Those of us who have had the opportunity to live here in San Miguel know that the Mexican people are warm, festive, and generous; they are very willing to show their love and affection, but they also need to feel pampered by those they love. Valentine’s Day in Mexico is not just a celebration among couples; it is a celebration of one’s relationship with important people in their lives. Even though the holiday was imported from Europe, it is a holiday that Mexico has embraced with enthusiasm!

One Valentine tradition that still exists in parts of Mexico is the meeting of young people in a park. Boys and girls walk around the town square in opposite directions until they encounter their intended, whereupon the boy gives his chosen girl a flower. If the girl circles again still holding the flower, she has conveyed to him that she is also interested in going out with him and romance may ensue.

Join us Saturday, February 13, at 7pm for our “flower” for San Miguel, a live Valentine concert with Rosa Guadalupe: “Noche del Amor.” She will perform traditional Mexican and Latin American love songs accompanied by Remy Fenoy on the charming “Cuban tres” guitar. Says the incurably romantic Rosa, “In Mexico, every day is a day of love and friendship!” Tickets are available at La Biblioteca and online at www.sheltervg4.com. 150 pesos.

Fridays, February 19 and 26, at 7pm, Shelter presents a live concert of French love songs: Chansons pour notre ville. Celebrating solidarity with France, Chansons pour notre ville (Songs for our Village) is a montage of French ballads performed by Pascal Monziea and Almitri Tzigane. You won’t want to miss the most endearing love songs of La Belle France. 150 pesos.

Shelter Theater is part of the Shelter VG4 Cultural Center, located at Vicente Guerrero 4, a short walk from the Jardín down Insurgentes.
