What Inspires San Miguel Playwrights?

By Anne Campbell

Where do writers’ ideas come from? Creativity is 10 percent inspiration and 90 percent perspiration. Thus, nine SMA Playwrights sweated over the blank pages to produce an evening of comedy and drama inspired by many sources. For a second year SMA Playwrights presents an evening of staged script-in-hand readings, which call upon the skills of some of our town’s most talented directors and actors.

Our authors are willing to reveal what inspired their creativity. And while their answers are varied, all seem to revolve around one theme: dreams deferred.

Lauren Osornio overhears a real life conversation and heightens it into a humorous fictional play, Black Coffee. Phoebe Greyson is fascinated by conflict where each party claims the moral high ground. The tyranny of social injustice inspires Lia Gladstone’s dramatic monologue, In the Mouth of the Wolf. Geoff Hargreaves is intrigued by how tricks can backfire on a trickster in What the Coitus? In his monologue, Drop Dead Spike, Stephen Huey explores how revenge, like greed, never sleeps. A question, “Do we watch what occurs after we die?” propels Allan Gross to pursue the answer in It’s All About Forgiveness. The Rules of Golf was born from author Bill Gallacher’s hatred of petty officialdom. David Temple’s Trade Secrets reveals how baking, like love, is all about chemistry. A word borrowed from German inspires Anne Campbell to Americanize it in Hotel Schadenfreude.

And the 90 percent perspiration? These SMA playwrights meet monthly to share their work with fellow authors who read aloud and comment. All agree that it is very inspiring to write for a deadline and to have a vehicle for ongoing feedback. The writing process continues as directors and actors bring scripts to life through rehearsal to performance on Teatro Santa Ana’s stage. We hope the evening inspires your dramatic muse as well!
