With Carla Coto and the Black Dice Blues Band
Thu, Feb 18, 8pm
El Sindicato Ballroom
Fresh from our sell-out concert at the Santa Ana in January, we want to answer the many calls for a danceable Blues show. We want to thank Jose Luis, the artistic director of the El Sindicato for giving us the ballroom on such short notice. How long has it been since you “cut a rug” Blues style?
Carla Coto, as San Miguel is finding out, is a major singing talent with great “stage smarts” and a real command of her blues material, aka Aretha Franklin, Koko Taylor, Etta James, et al.
Besides accompanying her with various regional harmonica styles, I will contribute some of your favorite “naughty” Blues, just to spice things up. Get ready to shuffle, boogie woogie, and rock out to the no B.S. guitar work of Roland Gotes, the bass of Chava Garcia, and the drums of SMA’s favorite percussionist Jesus Israel Chavez, who will be holding up our “Bottom End,” as we say in the blues.
Just want to say that the blues, from their humble beginnings as field hollers and spirituals, must be respected, preserved, and performed in their classic form, as well as modern day manifestations of our various cultural/musical heritages. This is the mission of Carla Coto and Black Dice. As we see it, the blues are as varied as each individual who wants to lay down something about their lives in song. Whether good, bad, or ugly, these 8, 12, and 16 bars (sometimes more or less) belong to all of us, and as performers, we are all aware how much the blues are “Good Fer What Ails You!” In other words:
“Dust off dat rusty butt!
“Shake dem tail feathers!”
“Grinds it likes you finds it!”
“Boogie dat woogie!!”
So honor us with your presence for a long overdue real live Boogie Woogie, Southern Blues, Roadhouse Blues, Urban Blues and Rhythm and Blues, Dance /Concert. Beer and wine will be available, and the tickets are 150 pesos. Tickets will be on sale at the El Sindicato’s office.
