Virginia Woolf’s Return to San Miguel
By Marc Taylor
Virginia Woolf called on women to write. Her call continues to resound almost a century later. Her words are as relevant for us today as they were in 1928 when Woolf delivered her lecture on women and fiction at the only two women’s colleges in England. As England’s preeminent woman of letters, though never formally educated, her voice rose against the sanctions that had perennially prevented women from having private space and an independent income¾the conditions necessary to create art. She called her lecture, “A Room of One’s Own.” Her words inspired generations and remind us now there is much yet to be done to free the mind for full expression.

Catherine Bryne returns to San Miguel to present A Room of One’s Own. The timing of her performances could not be more propitious with, the San Miguel Writers’ Conference and Literary Festival following a few days later. It is important to note on whose shoulders today’s literary giants stand. Ms. Bryne adapted A Room of One’s Own for the stage after a year of studying Woolf’s writing, her life, and times. She has succeeded in making this groundbreaking essay the doorway to Virginia Woolf’s character, accessible to all who wish to know her. No need to be afraid of Virginia Woolf when you can embrace her.
Ms. Bryne first performed her adaptation of A Room of One’s Own in 1992. Since then it has been the ground note of her artistic life. She brought Virginia Woolf to venues from Florida to Vermont, to colleges, churches, formal theaters, and makeshift library reading rooms. She performed the piece in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and headlined the San Miguel de Allende Virginia Woolf Festival. She now brings it to you, the reader, the writer, the thinker, the lover of literature and incandescent language. For Catherine it is a pleasure just to speak the words. For you, the pleasure will be to hear them¾channeled through an uncanny and transporting theatrical performance.
A Room of One’s Own will be performed at the San Miguel Playhouse February 3-6 at 7:30pm as well as at a matinee on February 6 at 3pm. The San Miguel Playhouse is located at Independencia 82. Tickets are available at Ensueños Galería, Mesones 57 and at the Playhouse one hour before show time. All seats are reserved. There is secure parking and a taxi concierge after the performance.
