Virginia Woolf’’s Return to San Miguel
By Marc Taylor
A Room of One’s Own, Virginia Woolf’s seismic essay on women and fiction comes back to San Miguel at the San Miguel Playhouse February 3 to 6 at 7:30pm, with a matinee on Saturday, February 6, at 3pm. Catherine Bryne portrays the author delivering the essay to the women at Newnham and Girton Colleges in 1928. At the time, these were the only colleges open to women, and the notion of feminist writing was effectively nonexistant.

In A Room of One’s Own, Woolf lays the foundation for women and writing. She encourages women to have a room of their own and an independent income as prerequisites to “that intellectual freedom of which great writings are born.” She wants women to free themselves from the bondage of patriarchal restrictions from education, enterprise, and free thought. “There is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind,” she says in response to being locked out of the library of an august men’s college.
Catherine Bryne embodies Virginia Woolf. Her attention to the details of movement, voice, character, intensity, and integrity has earned her praise and inspired audiences in the United States and abroad. She has performed at venues from Florida to Vermont, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and here in San Miguel, when she headlined the Virginia Woolf Festival presented by Players Workshop in 2002.
Catherine and the San Miguel Playhouse bring “A Room of One’s Own” to an expanded audience.
