San Miguel Playwrights Present: Winter Showcase 2016

Geoff Hargreaves

By Anne Campbell

“Off Broadway?” “Off Off Broadway?” How many “Offs” is the Teatro Santa Ana at La Biblioteca from The Great White Way, where even well-known playwrights struggle to have their plays produced? Like New York, San Miguel attracts audiences from around the world, hungry for new theatrical experiences.

And so, SMA Playwrights are delighted to present their Winter Showcase of original short plays by nine authors, whose experiences in theater range from high school productions to professional theater in the US and Canada. There will be three evening performances on Friday and Saturday, February 5 and 6, at 7pm, and Sunday, February 7, at 5pm. Reserved seat tickets for 150 pesos are on sale now at the Santa Ana Theater box office.

This will be the second year SMA Playwrights is producing an evening of staged readings and drawing from the talents of some of our town’s most talented directors and actors. The short play format will entertain audiences with a variety of settings, dilemmas, characters, and plot twists—affording the opportunity to experience the comedy and the drama of life—from vacationers on holiday to Holocaust heroines; from old flames reigniting to new flames flickering. From Anorexia to Xenophobia, there is a theme for everyone!

Many successful plays are nurtured and developed through playwriting workshops throughout the world. Published playwright and author Mark Saunders inspired San Miguel Playwrights to meet each month to write, read aloud, and receive critiques from their fellow writers.

SMA Playwrights uses a Yahoo group to share writing, information, and feedback online. Geoff Hargreaves, another founding member, agrees that “the spirit of constructive criticism, designed to improve the work in question” is the critical ingredient for play development.

And who knows, perhaps one of these plays will be seen on Broadway?
