Puttin’ On the Ritz

By Janice Zimolzak

In chapter six of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic, The Great Gatsby, the novel’s narrator Nick Caraway tells Gatsby, “You can’t repeat the past,” to which he replies incredulously, “Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!” Whether the past can or cannot be repeated may be fodder for lively book club discussions, but I think we can all agree that the past can surely be re-created … and re-created it will be on February 21, when Feed the Hungry San Miguel will be “puttin’ on the ritz”—an opulent and elegant Great Gatsby party.

The Roaring 20s, an era that ushered in dramatic social and political change, is iconically depicted by the flapper, the speakeasy, and the Charleston. It was a decade of great prosperity. The nation’s total wealth practically doubled and both the affluent and immigrant societies were swept up in an unprecedented realization of the American dream. They were making more money than they ever had before and spent it faster than they ever had. A huge new advertising industry steered them toward a fast-paced, luxurious, and glamorous world that their grandparents could not even have imagined. For the first time in the nation’s history more people were living in urban areas—in houses with electricity, washing machines, refrigerators, and radios. You just couldn’t keep them on the farm. The party was on!

Prohibition of the sale of alcohol in 1919 did little to deter that party atmosphere. It was rumored that in the year between the passing and the enforcement of the new law, New York’s Yale Club had stocked enough booze in its cellars to last its members for 40 years. Those without such foresight went underground and the speakeasy was born, not to mention bootlegging—American self-determination at its best.

The party continues at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon at the fashionable Rosewood, so please save the date and pick up next week’s Atención to learn about the details. Tickets will be on sale in early February. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased online at feedthehungrysma.org.
