The Better Halves Return to San Miguel
By David Johanssen
The Better Halves are an Austin-based husband and wife duo reminiscent of June Carter and Johnny Cash. Jimmy Joe and Chrissie have been a staple at one of Austin’s largest farmers markets for over a decade, where they get toes tapping with their upbeat and inspiring music. Their funny, touching duets use clever lyrics and real boy-girl banter to uplift audiences, who respond with laughter and knowing nods. Shelter Theater is proud to present a live concert with The Better Halves for two shows only! Saturday, January 16, and Sunday, January 17, both at 7pm.
Jimmy Joe has a great talent for storytelling; one of his “car songs” was featured on NPR’s “Car Talk.” Chrissie’s whimsical, melodic songwriting earned her the chance to perform on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” They play rousing Chet Atkins-influenced instrumentals, including a piece played with four hands on one guitar, which always bring down showers of applause! “Their guitar harmonies are amazing, their vocals blend so well together, and their lyrics are so thoughtfully put together. The Better Halves’ songs just make me happy.” (Les, Houston, TX.) Tickets are available at La Biblioteca and online at www.sheltervg4.com. 150 pesos.
Join us Tuesday, January 19, for an art opening of Afghanistan photos by Lia Gladstone as well as a documentary on the Afghanistan conflict. The reception for the opening will begin at 4 pm and the documentary will begin at 5 pm. The photos document Lia’s experiences with the Afghan people while she was teaching at the university in Kabul, Afghanistan. At 5 pm we will present Afghanistan, War Without End. The US-led war in Afghanistan aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda, but the conflict continues thru 2016 with more American casualties reported in recent days. 50 pesos.
