Opera San Miguel presents its second annual Mexico-Canada Co-OPERA-tive Concert at 2 pm, Saturday, January 23, at the Miguel Malo Auditorium, at Bellas Artes, San Miguel. First prize winner of Concurso San Miguel 2015, tenor César Delgado, returns to San Miguel to star alongside Canadian soprano Lara Secord-Haid. This concert is the result of an exciting international partnership aimed at advancing the careers of singers discovered each year through the OSM’s nationally celebrated contest, Concurso San Miguel. “This cultural exchange between OSM and Les Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques in Montreal is giving our singers invaluable international exposure,” says Artistic Director John Bills.

In 2014, Bills became the first director of a Mexican opera company invited to become a permanent member of the international committee of Les Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques in its 22-year history. His very first entrant, tenor Fabián Lara, won the International Prize in 2014 and shortly afterward made his European debut at the famed Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. This year, Bills sent two former Concurso San Miguel winners to Montreal, San Miguel’s own Alejandra Sandoval, and Germán Olvera, first prize winner in 2013. As a result, both were offered exciting debuts in Europe!
In return for the opportunity for OSM singers to audition in Montreal before a committee of opera directors and artists’ managers from North America, Europe, and Asia, Bills presents the Opera San Miguel Prize to a gifted young Canadian singer. The OSM Prize includes a joint concert with a Mexican singer in San Miguel in the Mexico-Canada Co-OPERA-tive Concert. This year’s OSM Prize was presented to Winnipeg soprano Lara Secord-Haid.
Ms. Secord-Haid comes to San Miguel with a distinguished resume. “A graduate of New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and the Juilliard School in New York City, she is a young artist of great promise,” says Bills, “capable of the highest flights of coloratura and possessing a rich and expressive overall quality. She will be well matched by César, who recently received his masters from Mannes School of Music in New York City, and whose career has taken off since winning our Concurso. He now has major representation in the US with Ken Benson Artists.”
“As we continue working to find new avenues to promote their careers,” Bills observes, “our singers are proving over and over that they are the equal of singers anywhere in the world. They just need the opportunity to be heard. This cultural exchange between Mexico and Canada is proving to be a giant step forward in that mission.” OSM hopes that fans of great singing, especially members of our Canadian ex-pat community, will turn out to support this important cultural exchange concert.
