How Fostering Changed My Life
From the SPA
By Jayn Corral
I had never thought about being a foster. We had two cats and a dog. I worked a lot, and my life was full. Then one day I was at the vet’s office having my cat put to sleep due to illness, my heart full of sadness, when a kind woman offered her condolences. She had a carrier full of kittens and wondered if I could take one home to foster until it was old enough to be put up for adoption. My heart said, “Of course,” and I took the adorable soul home to help heal my pain. From there, the rest, as they say, is history.
With my foster gene in full bloom, I looked to the Phoenix AZ Humane Society. While my husband was in Scotland on a golfing trip, I attended an orientation meeting for new fosters and went home with a mama cat and her four babies. My husband got home to find them in his shower. At this point, we turned our spare room into a fully equipped foster room.
Over several years we have probably fostered over 150 kittens and cats. When we moved to Mexico, fostering was one of the things I missed the most. When I visited the SPA, I knew full well that by helping the animals, I was filling a void in myself.
Fostering is ideal for people who love animals, who want to help with time and love rather than money, and who want to feel that they are contributing to the improvement of the community. It is a short-term commitment. Even if you are not a full-time resident, you can get your cat or dog “fix” while helping to save the lives of animals.
The SPA provides all medical care at our onsite clinic and can help with other needs. You provide love and attention. The SPA needs your help with our foster program. Even if you, for whatever reason, cannot become a foster parent, please help us spread the word to anyone who can provide a caring home to a deserving animal until we have space or until the animal is old enough or well enough to be adoptable. Thanks to being fostered, Cherie, only three weeks old when found, can now come to the SPA.
