Free Audio Book Program Officially Debuts at Rotary

By Robin Loving

One of the most enjoyable volunteer positions I ever had was as an audio engineer for a recording program for those who could not, for whatever reason, manage reading a book in the traditional manner. The people were clever and the material we recorded was enlightening. Best of all, I knew some of our listeners, who hung on our every word since they had selected the books we recorded.

Thus it was with great glee that I learned that Pamela Brown here is our link to a free audio book service available through the US National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. She will present the benefits of this service at Rotary on Tuesday, January 19, at 12:30 pm at Hotel Mision, Salida a Querétaro 1. The free presentation will be in English.

The USNLS serves low-vision US citizens by mailing free equipment and audio books all over the world. While some San Miguel residents are already using the service, there are many more who would enjoy the service if they knew about it. Brown will describe the service, the eligibility criteria, and the application process. If you are interested in this service, please bring a copy of the front page of your passport.

Brown moved to San Miguel from Maryland, Virginia, and Florida, where she had been a librarian, most recently managing a library for the USNLS, a division of the Library of Congress. In 2010, Brown’s library won the US National Library of the Year award for her work with blind and low-vision people in Virginia. She continues working with blind and low-vision people in San Miguel as a volunteer. Brown, a permanent resident of San Miguel, is the secretary of the Lions Club, a member of 100 Women Who Care, and a friend of the Escuela de Educación Especial.

Rotary unites neighbors, community leaders, and global citizens for the common good. For more information, contact President David McGinnis at, or Brown at
