Opera San Miguel Announces 2016 Season

By Shari Alexander

To celebrate the fifth anniversary season of John Bills as artistic director of Opera San Miguel (OSM), the prestigious international arts organization has announced an exciting new concert series, presented in addition to its flagship annual event, Concurso San Miguel. The series, In Concert! debuts on January 23, with two more concerts to follow, on February 6 and March 19. The events will be held at the Miguel Malo Auditorium of the Bellas Artes, Hernández Macías 75, on Saturday afternoons at 2pm.

“We are always looking for new performance opportunities for the singers we discover each year through our national contest, Concurso San Miguel,” says Bills, “as well as ways of presenting exciting musical offerings to our audience here in San Miguel. This new concert series offers both.”

In Concert! begins with the “Second Annual Mexico-Canada Co-OPERA-tive Concert” on January 23, and stars the winner of Concurso 2015, tenor César Delgado, alongside Winnipeg soprano Lara Secord-Haid, winner of the Opera San Miguel Prize at this year’s Les Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques competition in Montreal.

On February 6 the series continues with “Franco-Russo Concert” starring baritone Pablo Aranday, second-prize winner of Concurso 2015; with the vivacious Adriana Valdés, first-prize winner in 2014; and Dhyana Arom, the exciting fourth-prize winner in 2015. The concert will feature opera scenes by Francis Poulenc and Piotr Illych Tchaikovsky, presented with concert staging.

The final In Concert! on March 19 will be the much-anticipated “Winners Concert,” a program of opera arias, duets, and ensembles sung by the winners of the upcoming Concurso San Miguel 2016. All concerts will be accompanied at the Steinway by Maestro Mario Alberto Hernández, OSM’s resident pianist and coach. Each concert will also feature solo piano works performed by this dynamic virtuoso.

“I am thrilled to celebrate my fifth anniversary as artistic director by highlighting these former Concurso winners,” says Bills, “as well as this year’s new crop of thrilling young singers. This is a valuable opportunity for our audience to see the depth of support we offer our winners. We don’t just send them off with a check and a kiss. We follow up on their careers, open new opportunities for them, and give them performing experiences, which are the lifeblood of a young singer’s career.”

Make sure to save the dates! These performances will be truly memorable and tickets are sure to sell out quickly!
