Jane Dill at the Galería San Francisco
By Susan Santiago
The Galería San Francisco is pleased to have Jane Dill as our Featured Artist this month. Jane is a mixed media artist and teacher who has spent most of her adult life as an internationally known calligrapher and lettering artist, both commercially and in her fine art. Her new experimental work showcases her years of lettering experience and her newfound love of mixed media. Using painting, mark making, and texture, Jane works in many layers of color, plaster, and collage to bring depth and mystery to her work. She sees mixed media as the perfect medium for experimentation and plays with a variety of elements, never knowing where the painting will take her. Jane’s new work focuses on lettering and textures, with Celtic Runes, Mayan glyphs, ancient Roman carvings, invented alphabets, and texture from walls in San Miguel, which adds a visual texture and history to her paintings. After 30 years of writing calligraphy that had to be perfect, her wild “Asemic” writing is intentionally unreadable and is used as a form of self-expression and as a unique design element. Jane writes on thin Kozo paper with a variety of brushes, ruling pens, and squeeze bottles. Then she chooses which ones to collage into the art, using both her artistic intuition and design principals to guide her.
