Detox in San Miguel
By Jade Arroyo
After a long marathon of exciting festivities, celebrations, and cholesterol feasts, it’s time to get back to routine and take care of our bodies. We present some options in San Miguel for detoxing the body and mind.
Temazcal at Charco del Ingenio
For those not familiar with this practice, the temazcal is a ritual steam bath, paired with the use of herbs and medicinal plants. The temazcal has many health benefits: it purifies the body of toxins, lowers uric acid, cleanses the pores of the skin, and is excellent for weight loss and blood pressure regulation. El Charco del Ingenio offers two temazcales per month at the hands of expert temazcaleros. To book, visit elcharco.org
San Miguel is well known for its natural hot springs of sulfurous water. Besides having benefits for the health and recovery of the body, the therapeutic properties of relaxation are remarkable. These spas are located within 10 to 15 minutes of the city, on the road to Dolores Hidalgo. The two most famous are Escondido Place and La Gruta. There are no buses that take you there directly. Taxi fare is about 100-120 pesos.
The freshly made fruit and vegetable juices are vitamin cocktails that purify the body. There is something for every symptom: fiber or super green to pump-up the defenses, vitamin C for the skin, spirulina, ginger, and many more. We really like the combined juices at Genesis health store, located on Reloj 83, where you can find natural supplements as well.
Light and vegetarian diet
After the stuffed turkey and tamales, give your stomach and digestive system a break with a few days of vegetarianism. Try the delicious Nectar Tea House for breakfast and lunch (Correo 43). Here you will find a soothing, pretty atmosphere and healthy yet super-tasty food. Several vegan and gluten free options are available, plus delicious teas and herbal infusions.
Yoga and Pilates
San Miguel is heaven for yoga-lovers. Escencia Yoga Spa is registered with the Yoga Alliance and offers hot yoga practice along with reflexology, facials, hot stone therapy, and massage. Potrero 13, www.esenciayogaspa.com.
If you’re into Pilates, visit the Flying Roots studio located on Ancha de San Antonio 9 (above Paprika restaurant). This studio is very well equipped. Tasha Cunliffe is the instructor.
