A-Level Students Invited to Apply for University Scholarships
By Robin Loving
The dream of a university education that could bring one’s family out of poverty once and for all is elusive to many local A-level students because they lack the financial wherewithal. Enter Jóvenes Adelante, which for the past 15 years has granted five-year scholarships to A-level students who meet their rigorous screening criteria.

A-level students are invited to attend an application workshop Saturday, January 9, and Saturday, January 16, 10am–12pm at Smart Space, Salida a Celaya at Llycsa next to Bridgestone Tires. The workshops will be free and conducted in Spanish. Parking is available on premises, and Smart Space is located at a bus stop.
“We are seeking bright, motivated, accomplished students under the age of 29 who have at least three more years of university to complete, if not the usual five,” said Concepcion Elvira Provencal, vice president of student selection. We interview the students and their families and then provide those selected with monthly funding, a laptop suitable for their major, a mentor, life skills, psychological counseling, as needed, English as desired, and a graduate network. As a result, 85 percent of our students graduate, as compared with 22 percent in Mexico in general,” she concluded.
“I got a degree in education and immediately found very rewarding work in my field, thanks to my Jóvenes Adelante family,” said Diana Cadena, who graduated in 2015, “so I highly encourage other ambitious, A-level students to apply for a Jovenes Adelante scholarship.”
The application process will be open from January 14 through February 16, with the application available at www.JovenesAdelante.org. Final selection of students will depend on passage of their university entrance exams in the summer and the amount of funding JA is able to attract, for it ensures the funding of these scholarships in advance of granting them.
“We are planning to fund 15 students in our 15th year, and we currently have pledges for 10. Sponsorships of US$7,000 or equivalent over five years provide donors with the opportunity for tax deductions in the US and Canada, and the opportunity to connect to a brighter future through association with an outstanding student.
